Kesely opening the championships with a CR!
On the first evening of EJC in Helsinki we witnessed some tough races and exciting moments. Russia celebrated victories in the relays and Ajna Kesely made a new Championship Record in 800m freestyle.
Hungarian girls ruling 400m IM
Hungarian girls were head to head in 400m IM. In the morning prelims three of the Hungarians finished in top three Ajna Kesely being 1st with a time of 4.45,81, Lili Horvath being 2nd with 4.47,30 and Viktoria Mihalyvari-Farkas being third and therefore being left out from the evening’s final. In the final Kesely took an impressive victory with a time 4.41,55 leading Germany’s Yara Sophie Hierath by 4 seconds. Third was Hungary’s Horvath with a time of 4.45,88.
In women’s 100m free semifinal the European junior record holder Freya Anderson from Great Britain finished with a time 55.07 leading the group for tomorrow evening’s final. In men’s 100m back semifinal the world record holder Kliment Kolesnikov from Russia took the top seed with 53.99.
Men’s 50m fly final we saw an exciting race. Andrei Minakov from Russia was able to finish first with a time of 23.56 only 0.05 behind from the Championship Record. Women’s 50m breast was a tight race as well. Great Britain’s Tatiana Belonogoff took the 1st place in 31.29.
Ajna Kesely was in the pool again in 800m free. She touched the wall well ahead of her competitors taking home her second gold medal in the first day and bettering her championship record which was clocked 8.30,43.
Relays with freestyle on the first day
An exciting 4x100m freestyle relay final ended with Russian’s win with 3.18,21 Italy being second and Germany finishing third. Russian’s Kolesnikov scored the fastest leg in 48,32. Russia was unstoppable also in the women’s freestyle relay winning the final with the time of 3.43,03. Germany took the second seed and Italy third. Fastest leg of the women’s relay was by Germany’s Maya Tobehn in 54.80.
After the first day Russia is leading the medal table with 5 medals including 3 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze.
